Understanding LED Technology

Signs Plus provides the highest quality, most affordable, electronic LED sign on the market! The old technology of incandescent light bulb moving message signs has been too expensive to operate for most churches and schools. LED signs reduce the electric operating cost to 10% of that of an incandescent sign.
Another benefit of LED technology is maintenance costs are nearly non-existent!

An LED Is
An LED or Light Emitting Diode contains a chemical compound that gives off light when an electrical current passes through it. Unlike a lightbulb, there are no filaments or breakable parts that will need to be replaced. Signs Plus uses brand name LEDs provided by companies like Hewlett Packard that have a life expectancy of 100,000 hours!

A Pixel Is
A pixel is a point of light on an LED sign. An LED sign is made up of an array of pixels (or points of light - appearing as dots). A pixel can be as small as one LED or it may contain a cluster of pixels. (3, 4, 6, etc.) The closer the LED's are together, the higher the resolution of the image. (.6" spacing has a higher resolution than .9" spacing)

Viewing Distance & Time ARE Important
Viewing distance is one of the most important factors used to determine the correct size of an LED display. As a general rule, 1" of LED text is viewable up to 50' away.
The following chart lists the maximum time an audience will have to view a sign with specific character sizes.
Based on Signs Plus' experience, an average of at least 4 seconds is needed for a moving audience to adequately recognize and comprehend the content of a sign.

Viewing Angle IS Important
Yes! Signs Plus provides a 140 degree viewing angle. This allows you to view the message from all angles. The brightness will not fade out as you drive past the sign.

Characters Per Line
The number of characters per line is determined by the length of (or number of pixels across) the sign. The average single stroke letter requires 5 pixels across plus a space. Therefore a 96 column sign will display 16 characters. (96 / 6 = 16)

Individual LED Lamp Louvers
By utilizing individual mini louvers over each LED lamp, we are able to provide a greater level of contrast, brightness and daytime visibility when compared to standard cluster louvers. This is achieved by the mini louver providing an individual LED lamp shading during times of direct sun exposure.

Longer LED Life
Because of individual shading over LEDs, there is less heat accumulation resulting in longer LED life.

Clean Connection
The hybrid technology utilizes a direct connection to a special PC Board without the need of wires. Each of the pixels are now connected directly to the driver boards resulting in a more dependable, lower cost, and easy to service display.

Individually Detachable Pixels
Signs Plus' "plug-and-play" technology allows each pixel to be individually detached for easy serviceability! In fact, it will take less than 5 seconds to replace each pixel!
