School and Church LED Sign Projects

"I'm in charge of the new outdoor moving message (LED) sign project...Now What Do I Do?"

Here's a few ideas and answers to this and other questions you might have, from America's most respected sign company:

1. Check with your local zoning board before you do anything. Do they allow messages to be changed "at will" or limit changes per hour or per day? Are you allowed:

  • Graphics?
  • Animations?
  • Video?
    • Are there brightness limits?
    • Are you able to have:
      1. multi-colored LEDs?
      2. red LEDs?
      3. amber LEDs?
      4. full color?

2. Size!

  • How many square feet of signage are you allowed?
  • How is this calculated?
  • Height restrictions?

3. Is there a permit required? What restrictions are attached to it and the sign installation? Can volunteers install the sign and "hook-up" the electric? Can the district do this?
Armed with this important information, you can move forward.
The next aspect of sign selection is to determine the minimum size that will best serve your needs.
The speed of traffic passing by the sign and the set- back (of the sign) from the road will determine the best letter size for readability. This will then determine the minimum and/or ideal sign for your organization.

Viewing Distance and Time Chart

Standard letter sizes range in 2" increments from 4" to 18" in height. Most situations are best suited for 2 or 3 lines of moving message. We have models that allow from 1 line to 5 lines of copy.

The next consideration will be:
1. A one-sided sign (usually facing the roadway or "parallel" to it.)
2. A two-sided sign allowing for viewing in traffic approaching from either direction.
3. Research studies and commercial installers overwhelmingly support a two-sided sign set perpendicular to the highway.

Once these considerations have been given, call us here at Signs Plus (800-848-4262) for a quick quote. We'll determine if the "ideal" or even minimum size sign fits within your budget.

When we've established what sign you'll want, Signs Plus will prepare for you a detailed packet with specifications, prices, color rendering and support data.

Your identification area of the sign may include your school mascot and be done in your school colors, or in colors that match the exterior of your buildings.

If budgeted funds are not available, will you be fundraising?

Signs Plus is also willing to help you comparison shop. Comparison sheets, warranty information and detailed specifications are just a call away.
