LED Display vs. Changeable Copy

While the upfront cost of an LED Electronic Message System school sign may be more than a traditional changeable copy sign, the long term benefits and savings gained worth looking into. Your outdoor sign does not only identify your facility, but it is a vital communication tool that enables you to communicate with everyone who passes by each day.LED Sign vs. Changeable Letters

Benefits of Electronic Messaging Systems

  • Greater viewing distance, especially at night. LED emits light which allows one inch of text to be viewed from 50 feet away while 1 inch of standard print text is viewable up to 32 feet away. You want to give your audience as much time and distance to read your message, especially if they are in a car.
  • Ability to display more messages. Electronic messaging LED Sign vs. Changeable Letterssystems allow you to cycle through numerous and different messages.
  • Increase your visibility with transition and display styles, animated graphics and time & temperature displays.
  • Schedule messages 1 year in advance.
  • Time saved from not having to manually change letters.
  • Money saved from not having to replace changeable copy letters.

Viewing Distance & Time
Viewing distance is one of the most important factors used to determine the correct size of an LED display. As a general rule, 1 inch of text is viewable up to 50 feet away. The following diagram illustrates at what distance and character size an audience will recognize
and understand the content shown on an LED display if the audience is stationary. Click here to view the Viewing Distance and Time Chart.

Sign Viewing Distance

Another factor to consider when the target audience is not stationary - Based on Signs Plus' experience and research, an average of at least 4 seconds is needed for a moving audience to adequately recognize and comprehend the content of a sign. The chart lists the maximum time an audience will have to view a sign with specific character sizes. For example, a sign with four inch text is not suited for 55mph traffic, because the audience will have only 2.5 seconds to view display.

Summary:

  • 2 inch text works well in most foot traffic areas, such as for indoor applications.
  • 4 to 6 inch text is ideal for 45 mph or under traffic, such as outdoor church and school applications.
  • 9 inch text or larger is suited for most outdoor applications where traffic is 60 mph or slower.
